INSTALAÇAO DE VIDEO - KIKA NICOLELA

THE FILM THAT IS NOT THERE desmembra a ideia de um filme que nunca virá a existir.

THE FILM THAT IS NOT THERE dismembers the idea of a film that will never come to exist. Based on a feature film script developed by the Brazilian artist, Kika Nicolela summoned actors to participate of a casting audition. She provided scenes extracted from this screenplay and shot the auditions in studio with the actors playing in pairs. However, unlike a regular audition in which the aim is to choose one actor to play a certain role in a later shooting of the film, the casting audition itself is the base for the artwork. The goal is not to select an actor for a role, but to explore the highest possible number of versions of the same characters and text. The final piece is a multi-channel video-installation presented in loop. The artist shot the work in Brazil, Singapore, South Korea and Switzerland, with the participation of over 100 actors playing in their original language. THE FILM THAT IS NOT THERE proposes a reflection on representation and narrative, emptying the original meaning of the script in order to search for a fluid multi-layered narrative that is born out of the experience of the spectator with the artwork.

THE FILM THAT IS NOT THERE was the recipient of the Funarte Contemporary Art Award 2011, and as a result it will have its first complete presentation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The exhibition will take place at the Gustavo Capanema Palace – in itself a gem of the Brazilian modernism – opening on November 22 and remaining until December 21 2012. Another 2 events are programmed in a dialog with the exhibition: the workshop 'Cinema in Exhibition', with Kika Nicolela on December 04 and a public talk with the artist and the researcher Livia Flores on December 06.
